WINTER BREAK

This break, I'm trying to improve my gesture drawing skills as well as work on the shifting of weight of a character in a side-step. Click image for a very rough splinned version of the side step. I need to fix the popping knees (a given)) but I'd also like to make it feel a little less swimmy. Critiques very welcomed! :)

Heya Lauren,

Hows the break going? I like your sidestep, you have the right idea.

One thing to note is that when the weight transfers to the right leg before the actual step, ballie moves up in a straight line. You may want to keep the character moving to his right when he is also moving up.

Also track the bodys motion though ghosting, and look for a nice figure eight type shape.

hi lauren

hey you need the frame counter to make sure all your crits are helpful, otherwise it is sometimes hard to explain without the frame counter.

the one thing that is sticking out to me it the transfer of weight in ballie. the first thing he has to do if he wants to lift his leg up is transfer the weight over the supporting leg. i don't see this happening with either step, it is hard to give you exactly where i'm seeing it cause theres no frame counter!! but I'll try. When ballie takes his little side step left, he needs to move his center of gravity over the supporting leg which is stage right. then when he wants to lift up the stage right leg he needs to bring his center of gravity over the stage left leg. that way he will always be in balance.

you just need to use the translate node for ballie's body to adjust where his weight is at all points. there are a few frames that seem unbalanced, where if you step through and ballie's left leg is up but the center of his gravity or centerline of his body is kind of in mid air, not directly over the supporting leg, try this yourself, you would fall over.

Hey Lauren, I'm gonna start commenting on stuff I see you put up here over the term ok?

Anthea is right on, when ballie takes a big step to screen right, you should get more weight shift over the other leg. I also think you can put some of those exaggeration skills you've got and push the animation, get his foot higher and make it more fun, but I dunno, maybe you are trying to make it more natural looking.

One more big thing. Even though this is just a simple side step, you've got even timing over the duration of the step. You can really get more pleasing effect if you favor the beginning shift alot more, speed through the middle (cut out some frames) and favor then favor the end. Basically use less frames in the middle. You'll end up with a snappier feel. But like before, maybe you are trying to be more naturalistic.
